Blue's Trail Guide: Hiking Tips & Tricks

Blue pointing at a sign that says Pack what you need

Hey there, trail friends! It's me, Blue β€” your favourite wilderness companion. I've spent a lot of time out on the paths, through the forests, over the hills, and under the big open sky. And along the way, I've picked up a few things I think every hiker should know.

So lace up your boots, strap on your pack, and let's get into it. 🐾

πŸŽ’ Pack What You Need

Not everything. Just what helps you move forward.

One of the biggest mistakes new hikers make is overpacking. I get it β€” you want to be prepared for everything. But a heavy pack slows you down and wears you out before the trail even gets good. Think about what you actually need: water, snacks, a first aid kit, a map, and layers for the weather. Keep it lean. Keep it purposeful.

πŸ’§ Keep Yourself Going

Sip often. Stay steady.

Hydration isn't just for when you're thirsty β€” by the time you feel thirsty, you're already behind. I always carry a good flask and take small sips regularly throughout the hike. Streams and rivers are beautiful, but always treat or filter wild water before drinking. Your body will thank you at the summit.

🍯 Fuel Your Journey

Snack often. Keep your energy up.

Hiking burns more energy than you think. Don't wait until you're running on empty β€” snack little and often to keep your energy levels steady. I'm a big fan of natural energy: nuts, dried fruit, oat bars, and yes… a little honey never hurt anyone. 🍯 Find what works for you and keep it within easy reach.

πŸŒ… Enjoy the Journey

Savor every moment of the path.

It's easy to get so focused on reaching the top that you forget to look around. Some of my favourite moments on the trail have been halfway up β€” a deer in the trees, a view through a gap in the clouds, the sound of a stream below. Slow down. Breathe it in. The destination is great, but the journey is where the magic lives.

🐾 Take It One Step at a Time

Keep moving forward.

Every big trail is just a series of small steps. When it feels tough β€” and sometimes it will β€” don't look at how far you have to go. Just focus on the next step. Then the one after that. Before you know it, you'll be somewhere you never thought you could reach. That's the magic of putting one paw in front of the other.

🦊 Go Further Together

You don't have to go alone.

Some of my best adventures have been shared ones. Whether it's a friend, a family member, or a fellow trail-lover you meet along the way β€” hiking with others makes the hard parts easier and the good parts even better. Look out for each other. Share your snacks. Celebrate the view together.

That's Blue's trail guide for now! Whether you're heading out for your first walk in the woods or planning something a little more ambitious, I hope these tips help you feel ready, confident, and excited for what's ahead.

The wild is waiting. See you out there. 🐾

β€” Blue
