Water is Your First Priority
You can survive weeks without food but only days without water. In the wild, finding and purifying water is non-negotiable.
Finding Water
Follow valleys downhill — water flows to the lowest point. Listen for running water. Look for animal tracks converging — they often lead to a source. Green vegetation in an otherwise dry landscape signals water nearby.
Boiling
The most reliable purification method. Bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute (three minutes at altitude). This kills bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
Filtration
A quality filter like a Sawyer Squeeze or LifeStraw removes bacteria and protozoa. Lightweight and essential kit for any serious trail pack.
Chemical Treatment
Iodine or chlorine tablets are a lightweight backup. They work against most pathogens but are less effective against cryptosporidium. Always carry them as a last resort.
What to Avoid
Never drink stagnant water without treatment. Avoid water downstream of farms or settlements. Clear water isn't always safe — always purify.
Walk Your Wild — and never go thirsty.
